NiJaree Canady get 13 strikeouts in 5.0 innings for 12th no-hitter in program history
LUBBOCK, Texas – The legend of NiJaree Canady continues to grow as she threw the 12th no-hitter in program history thanks to a season-high 13 strikeouts as No. 2 Texas Tech (19-1) won 18-0 in five innings against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (4-15).
Canady threw on Thursday night against Abilene Chirstian and had a no-hitter through 4.2 innings before the Wildcats broke up the no-no, down to their last out. The reigning National Pitcher of the Year made sure that wouldn't happen two games in a row as she struck out the final seven batters she faced.
Desirae Spearman was the offensive MVP, going 3-for-4 with a career-high seven RBI thanks to a pair of home runs. Taylor Pannell had a great day at the plate as well going 3-for-3 with four RBI including a bases-clearing triple. Mihyia Davis, Hailey Toney and Kaitlyn Terry each recorded multiple hits as well. Mia Williams picked up her seventh home run of the season on a two-run homer in the first inning.
Lauren Allred, Lagi Quiroga and Jackie Lis all picked up hits, Lis recording an RBI single in Tech's four-run first inning.
How it Happened:
The Islanders worked a pair of walks in the first inning – two of the three base runners they would have all game – but Canady and the defense didn't let anything come of it and got out of the only trouble they would be in all day.
Tech scored four runs in the first inning thanks to a home run by Williams, a double by Spearman and a single by Lis.
The Red Raiders posted 14 runs in the second inning thanks to two three-run homers by Spearman and a three-run triple by Pannell.
UP NEXT: Tech will be back in action at 4:30 today to take on Detroit Mercy.
