For the second straight week, Burns tossed six two-run innings
LUBBOCK, Texas – Redshirt Freshman Jackson Burns tossed six innings of two run ball to power Texas Tech to an 11-2 win over Houston Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Held to just two hits through five innings, the Texas Tech (18-13, 5-7 Big 12) offense exploded with three in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh to salvage the series finale.
In the win, the Red Raiders scored double-digit runs for the 17th time in the season's first 31 games.
A day after breaking out for 22 hits, the Red Raiders had just nine on Saturday, but drew 13 walks and were hit by two pitches.
The game, which ended with one out in the eighth and the Red Raiders just one run away from a run-rule victory, was called due to a previously determined drop time of 3:15 p.m.
Starting in the series finale for the fourth-straight week, Burns allowed just a two-run home run to Houston's (15-15, 3-9 Big 12) Cade Clime in the top of the second over his six strong innings.
Burns scattered four hits and struck out six UH batters.
Down 2-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth, Texas Tech used a one-out Matt Quintanar walk and a Tracer Lopez single up the middle to put the tying runs on base.
Down in the count 0-2, Tech SS Coleman Ryan lifted a sac-fly that scored Quintanar to cut the Cougar lead in half. Ryan who went 2-for-3 on Saturday afternoon drove in two runs and also scored twice.
With both Burns and UH starter Paul Schmitz firing zeros in the fifth, the game remained 2-1 UH until the bottom of the sixth, when the Red Raiders used four, two out walks and an infield single to strike for three runs.
The three runs for the Red Raiders came on back-to-back-to-back walks.
Returning for the seventh in a 4-2 game, Burns issues a six-pitch lead-off walk to UH's Easton Winfield to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Clime.
Already with a two-run home run to his account off of Burns, the Red Raiders turned reliever Logan Bevis who got Clime to bounce into a 6-4-3 GDP and struck out pinch-hitter Carsten Sabathia III to fire a zero.
Armed with the momentum, the Red Raiders struck for seven runs in the bottom-half of the to take an 11-2 lead. Amongst the big hits in the bottom of the seventh was a two-run RBI single from left fielder Connor Shouse as well as back-to-back doubles from Logan Hughes and Linkin Garcia. The first double from Hughes scored one run, while the Garcia two-base hit scored two.
Returning for the top of the eighth, Bevis tossed a 1-2-3 eighth, to seal the Red Raiders game three win.
