2019 SEASON (SOPHOMORE)
Once again a strong contributor in the backfield and in the passing game as a sophomore … appeared in nine games with two starts, missing three games during Big 12 play due to injury … missed the Baylor (10/12), Kansas State (11/23) and Texas (11/29) games … totaled 340 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground on 72 carries … averaged 37.8 yards per game and 4.5 yards per carry … on the receiving end of 22 passes as well, totaling 138 yards on 6.3 yards per reception … rushing and receiving numbers were very similar to final numbers from his 2018 true freshman campaign … finished second on the team with 796 all-purpose after also splitting time as one of the Red Raiders’ main kick returners … actually was the team leader in all-purpose yards per game, averaging an impressive 88.4 yards … led the team with 13 kick returns, two more than teammate KeSean Carter … also boasted the most kick return yards (318) and the highest kick return average (24.5) … posted at least 70 all-purpose yards seven times on the year … IN NCAA RANKINGS: ended the year ranked 25th in average kick return yards (24.5) and 84th in total kick return yards (318) … IN BIG 12 RANKINGS: led the league in kickoff return average … was also eighth in total kick return yards and ninth in all-purpose yards per game (88.4) ... SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: led the team with 12 carries in the season opener against Montana State (8/31), resulting in 55 yards on the grounds … recorded a season-high five receptions as well for 22 yards to go along with one kick return for 19 yards … matched his season-high with five receptions the next week in win over UTEP (9/7) … finished with 32 yards through the air versus the Miners, while also carrying seven times for 28 yards and a touchdown and returning one kick 28 yards … limited to only four carries for 21 yards and one reception for one yard at Arizona (9/14) … one of those carries went 19 yards, marking his longest run of the season that would be matched two other times … doubled in total carries in Big 12 opener at Oklahoma (9/28), ending with eight carries for 31 yards … notched 50 yards on the ground via seven carries and three receptions for 41 yards the following week in top-25 victory over Oklahoma State (10/5) … fell one yard shy of matching his career high for receiving yards … called on a season-high four times for kick returns against Iowa State (10/19), finishing with 93 yards … had five carries for 41 yards as well as three receptions for 11 yards … carried seven times for 39 yards at Kansas (10/26) and returned two kicks for 32 yards … nearly returned his first kickoff for a touchdown versus the Jayhawks but was called back on an account of a penalty … biggest game of the year came in the win at West Virginia (11/9), carrying 22 times for 67 yards and two touchdowns, while also hauling in four passes for 28 yards … marked his second career game with 20 or more carries … fell only two all-purpose yards shy of matching his career high that was set during his 2018 true freshman campaign … struggled with injuries down the stretch, receiving only three carries for eight yards against TCU (11/16), his final game of the season … did manage to return a kickoff 63 yards against the Horned Frogs, setting up a Texas Tech touchdown that cut the deficit to 24-10 in the second quarter … AWARDS AND HONORS: Academic All-Big 12 first team selection.
Found his stride early and emerged as a breakout star as only a true freshman … appeared in 11 contests with five starts, missing only the Texas game ... limited by injuries late in the season … led the running back unit with 341 yards and eight touchdowns on 86 carries … team-leader for both attempts and rushing touchdowns … averaged 4.0 yards per carry … also a threat in the passing game with 22 receptions for 145 yards and a touchdown … IN THE NCAA RANKINGS: ranked 91st in the nation in rushing touchdowns with eight on the year … finished tied for ninth among freshmen in rushing touchdowns … IN THE BIG 12 RANKINGS: ranked ninth in the league for rushing touchdowns and 16th in total touchdowns … SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: limited to only one reception for one yard in the season opener against Ole Miss (9/1) but followed with a strong performance in blowout win over Lamar (9/8) … carried 11 times for 55 yards and two touchdowns versus the Cardinals, while also catching three passes for 20 yards … best performance of the year came in the non-conference finale against Houston (9/15) … totaled season highs for carries (24), rushing yards (111), rushing touchdowns (4), receptions (7) and receiving yards in the victory … became only the fifth Red Raider since 2000 to record four rushing touchdowns in a game, joining the likes of Taurean Henderson (2005), Baron Batch (2009), DeAndre Washington (2015) and Desmond Nisby (2017) … one of two Big 12 players and one of four freshmen nationally to post four rushing touchdowns in a single game … his 111 yards on the ground, meanwhile, were the most by a true freshman since Justin Stockton totaled 135 at UTEP in 2014 … followed with 65 rushing yards off 11 carries in the Big 12 opener at Oklahoma State … his 65 yards marked his most during league play … carried at least eight times in the next three games against West Virginia (9/29), TCU (10/11) and Kansas (10/20) … accumulated 20 rushing yards versus West Virginia and TCU before posting 62 in win over Kansas … totaled over 100 all-purpose yards in Kansas game with 41 receiving yards on four receptions … limited to only eight carries over the final five games of the season … one receiving touchdown on the year did come during that stretch thanks to a 14-yard swing pass against Oklahoma … AWARDS AND HONORS: collected honorable mention accolades for the Earl Campbell Player of the Week Award following his performance against Houston.
