Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country Teams AnnouncedDALLAS, Texas - A total of 102 student-athletes, including 10 with a perfect 4.0 grade point averages and eight women from Texas Tech, have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 women's and men's cross country teams announced today by the league office. Most of these student-athletes will compete this weekend (Saturday, Nov. 1) at the second Big 12 Conference Women's and Men's Cross Country Championships in Stillwater, Okla.
The championships will be run on the OSU Cross Country Course, with the women's race beginning at 11 a.m. (Central) and the men's race beginning at noon. Colorado swept both the women's and men's titles last year in Ames, Iowa. Eight women sit atop the list with 4.0 GPAs. The list includes Baylor's Karin Ernstrom, Colorado's Lindsay Arendt, Iowa State's Gayle Nugent, Marsha Neal of Kansas, Kansas State's Emily Diederich, Katherine Smith of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State's Karla Dennis and Texas Tech Red Raider Keeli Hanzelka. Ernstrom was selected Big 12 Runner of the Week after she finished second in the collegiate division at the Cal-Poly Invitational. Hanzelka finished sixth at the Kachina Classic after crossing the finish line in eighth place at the Red Raider Invitational. Headlining the men's list with 4.0 GPAs are Oklahoma State's Eric Framme and Texas A&M's Stephen Erath. Framme has helped Oklahoma State secure the No. 13 spot in the top-25 poll by placing in the top 30 in three of the Cowboys four meets, including a fifth-place run at the Wichita Gold Classic. Erath has been a big part of the Aggies' four meet wins this season by finishing in the top six in four of the team's six meets and five times he has been in the top 20. Strong performances on the course and in the classroom seem to run hand-in-hand for six Big 12 Runners of the Week. Along with Ernstrom, Texas' Maureen Sweeney and Missouri's Erin Windler claimed Runner of the Week honors. Sweeney received the honor after winning the Texas Invitational, while Windler was selected two weeks later after setting a career-best time in winning the Illinois Invitational. On the men's side, Iowa State's Saul Lempirikany, Oklahoma State's Rene Carlsen and Texas A&M's Scott Lengefeld received both honors. Lempirikany was named after finishing second at the Roy Griak Invitational, an event attended by six top-25 teams. Carlsen claimed his recognition by leading Oklahoma State to a first-place finish on the strength of his top individual finish at the Wichita Gold Classic. Lengefeld was selected after he won his second consecutive title at the Rice Invitational on the way to leading the Aggies to the team crown. Nominated by the directors of student-athlete support services and the athletic media relations directors, members of the all-academic teams have posted at least a 3.0 grade point average either cumulative or the previous two academic semesters and are regulars, i.e. letterwinners, on their respective teams. First-team honorees are regulars who have at least a 3.2 grade point average, while those student-athletes with grade point averages of between 3.0 and 3.19 are listed as honorable mention. 1997 Academic All-Big 12 Conference Men's Cross Country Team FIRST TEAM Name, School Class Major Hometown Adam Batliner, Colorado Jr. Fine Arts Lakewood, Colo.
