Texas Tech University Athletics
Sport Psychology Predoctoral Internship
Texas Tech Athletics partners with the Student Counseling Center to offer a sport psychology track for the APA-accredited predoctoral internship in health service psychology. Each year, one person will be selected as the sport psychology intern who will serve in a full-time, 12-month appointment that is a 50/50 split between Athletics and the SCC. At its completion, the intern should be successfully prepared for a career in health service psychology focused on working with athletes and other high performers.
Requirements
Applicants should have completed all coursework toward their doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology prior to starting the internship, including at least 350 hours of practicum Intervention experience. Applicants are required to have passed their comprehensive exams and have their dissertation proposal approved by the ranking deadline. In addition to the application requirements for all intern positions, successful applicants for the sport psychology specialization track must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a professional practice, academic, or research-based career in sport psychology.
Preferred skills include:
During their time in Athletics, the sport psychology intern will have the opportunity work with student-athletes on both clinical and performance-related concerns. The sport psychology intern will gain experience providing individual psychotherapy, health and behavior interventions, psychological assessment, performance enhancement facilitation and training, and psychoeducational presentations within Athletics. Two significant components for this training position are to develop competency in: working among a multidisciplinary treatment team housed within a multifaceted sport organization; and providing culturally informed services to an increasingly diverse student-athlete population.
