Tim Tadlock completed his 13th season at the helm of his alma matter in 2025. Since taking over as the skipper of the Red Raiders in 2013, Tadlock has built his alma mater into a national powerhouse, leading the Red Raiders to four College World Series (2014, 2016, 2018, 2019) and three Big 12 Championships (2016, 2017, 2019).
A two-time National Coach of the Year, Tadlock was named head coach of his alma mater on June 8, 2012, becoming the ninth head coach in program history. He owns a collegiate career record of 908-403 in 22 years as a head coach with nine seasons at Grayson County College (435-127) and the last 13 at Texas Tech (473-276).
Under Tadlock, the Red Raiders have become a national contender year in and year out. Tech was one of six schools in the nation to advance to the College World Series four times from 2014-2024, including consecutive trips in 2018 and 2019 for the first time in school history. Tadlock put his teams in a position to host five consecutive regionals, making Texas Tech the only school in the country to accomplish the feat from 2016-2021, and has advanced to NCAA postseason play from 2016-23.
During Tadlock’s 13 seasons, the Red Raiders have recorded five 45+ win seasons and three Big 12 titles. Individually, Tech has had 15 individuals earn All-America honors - five who were First Team All-America selections – 16 Freshman All-America honors, a College Baseball Foundation National Pitcher of the Year, a Brooks Wallace Award Winner, and two Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Awards. At the conference level, Tech has accumulated 33 First Team All-Big 12 selections and 59 total All-Big 12 (first and second team) selections, four Big 12 Players of the Year, two Big 12 Pitchers of the Year, three Big 12 Freshmen of the Year and a Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
The Red Raiders have had 70 student-athletes selected in the MLB Draft under Tadlock, including a school-record 11 in 2018. In 2021, a school-record seven Red Raiders were selected within the top 10 rounds. Overall, Tadlock has coached 177 MLB Draft picks, including at least one draft pick during the last 30 seasons, and has coached five first-round selections, 22 players taken in the top five rounds and 57 selections in the top 10 rounds of the draft during his coaching career.
With the remarkable team success, Tech fans have packed Rip Griffin Park in Tadlock’s 13seasons. In 2015, Texas Tech sold out its season ticket allotment for the first time ever following its first appearance in the CWS. And since, Texas Tech season tickets have been sold out each ensuing season. The 20225 seasons marked the 11th straight that season tickets have sold out prior to the start of the season. Tech has consistently ranked among the national leaders in attendance, finishing in the top 15 in attendance each year from 2015-23 while compiling a 185-50 home record in that span.
2022 – Make it Six Straight
The 2022 Red Raiders continued what it had been doing since 2016, competing in the NCAA Tournament, but it was new territory as the previous five regionals were hosted in Lubbock and this edition sent Texas Tech on the road. Tadlock’s team advanced to a Regional Final for the sixth-straight year, with its run ending there in 2022 to CWS participant Notre Dame. Once the season came to a close, Texas Tech finished inside the Top 25 of all six national polls in the end-of-season rankings, extending a steak that also started in 2016.
Tadlock’s players received numerous accolades from All-American selections, Big 12 awards and academic awards, which was led by consensus All-American and first-round MLB Draft pick Jace Jung. The second baseman was selected 12th overall by the Detroit Tigers and became the third-highest MLB Draft pick in Texas Tech program history. Jung entered 2022 with much hype and backed it up by being the only position player to be named a preseason and postseason D1Baseball First Team All-American. Jung was named a first-team All-American by three organizations in 2022 as well as a second and third-teamer. He was named to the All-Big 12 first team for the second consecutive season and an Academic All-American for the second-straight year by CoSIDA.
Under Tadlock’s purview, right-handed pitcher Brandon Birdsell became Texas Tech’s 46th all-time All-American in program history and the 15th individual during the Tadlock era. In addition, he became the second under Tadlock to earn Big 12 Pitcher of the Year honors since 2017. Similarly, catcher/first baseman Hudson White was named the 23rd all-time freshman All-American in program history and the 15th individual to earn Freshman All-American honors during the Tadlock era. White was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, making him the third Big 12 Freshman of the Year under Tadlock since 2017.
Five Red Raiders heard their names called in the Major League Baseball Draft, three of which were called in the first five rounds, which rose the total to 62 Red Raiders to enter the professional ranks since Tadlock to the reigns of Texas Tech baseball. Surrounding all the success ultimately stirred Red Raider Nation to sell out its home ballpark for the eighth consecutive season. In 2022 it was more than 2,750 season tickets sold, establishing a new season ticket sales record.
2021Â -Â Back to the Supers
Tech’s 2021 season was one that saw a squad rally together and fight through a slow start and a season that plagued them with injuries. The Red Raiders won 14 in a row after its opening series. Tech finished 39-17, including 27 wins in the friendly confines of Rip Griffin Park. Tadlock’s team was rewarded with a No. 8 national seed in the NCAA tournament and hosted a regional for the fifth-straight year and qualified to host a Super Regional for the third time in the last five completed seasons. Tech’s loss to Stanford marked the first time the Red Raiders did not advance out of the Super Regional, having been 4-0 in such series previously.
After the season, Texas Tech turned in the second-most Major League Baseball Draft selections of any team in the country with nine. Despite only a 20-round draft, Tech boasted its third-highest draft haul in school history, matching its total from 2012 while only trailing the 11 Red Raiders picked following the 2018 season and 10 chosen in 2016.
Tadlock’s second baseman, Jace Jung, was one of the most decorated players in the country. He was a consensus All-American and Academic All-American. The second baseman was named the Big 12 Player of the Year, NCBWA National Freshman Hitter of the Year, NCBWA District 7 Co-Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy. Additionally, he was a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection, an NCBWA District 7 First Team pick, and an ABCA All-Region Team member. Jung was one of two All-Americans on the 2021 squad as shortstop Cal Conley was a four-time All-American and was named the 2021 Brooks Wallace Award winner for the nation’s top shortstop.
2020 - No. 1 Ranking, COVID-19
Tech opened 2020 with lofty expectations yet again, looking to defend its Big 12 title and make another run to Omaha. Tadlock’s crew, who starting as high as No. 3 in the preseason polls for the third straight year, opened the season 16-3 and climbed to No. 1 in the polls at one point for the first time since 1997. The season, however, was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the middle of March.
Despite the abrupt end to the season, several Red Raiders were recognized nationally as Brian Klein, Cal Conley and Micah Dallas were placed on All-America teams. Additionally Jace Jung and Nate Rombach earned Freshman All-America honors.
The Red Raiders had a successful 2020 MLB Draft with right-handers Clayton Beeter and Bryce Bonnin both selected in the five-round draft. Tech was one of two Big 12 schools with multiple players chosen and extended its streak to 30 consecutive years with a draft pick, the third longest streak in the country. Additionally, the 41 Red Raiders that have bene drafted since 2015 is the most in the Big 12 and in the state.
Beeter went No. 66 overall to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Competitive Balance Round B, while Bonnin was taken with pick No. 84 by the Cincinnati Reds in the third round. Beeter became the sixth highest Red Raider ever drafted, while the duo became the sixth ever from Tech to go in the first five rounds of the same draft.
2019 – Big 12 Title, Deepest CWS Run
The 2019 season was the most successful campaign in Texas Tech history. The Red Raiders captured their third Big 12 title in four years, earned the No. 8 national seed and advanced to the College World Series for the fourth time in six seasons. Tech made its deepest postseason run ever, eliminating Arkansas and Florida State to finish as one of the last four teams remaining in Omaha.
The 2019 squad tallied Tadlock’s fifth 45+ win season with a 46-20 record and a 16-8 mark in Big 12 play. Junior Josh Jung and senior Cameron Warren were named All-Americans while Clayton Beeter and Micah Dallas received Freshman All-America honors. Jung was named the Big 12 Co-Player of the Year while four other Red Raiders received All-Big 12 First Team recognition and three more received second team nods. Beeter and Dallas led a trio of Big 12 All-Freshman Team selections.
Jung was selected No. 8 overall in the 2019 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers to become the second first round pick in Tech history. He led a group of seven draftees with four of those occurring in the first 10 rounds as Gabe Holt went in the seventh round, Caleb Kilian in the eighth and Taylor Floyd in the 10th.
2018 – Third CWS Appearance
In 2018, the Red Raiders posted their fourth 45+ win season under Tadlock with a 45-20 record and a 15-9 mark in league play. Four Red Raiders garnered All-America recognition while five received All-Big 12 First Team nods. Additionally, Gabe Holt took home Big 12 Freshman of the Year to make it consecutive years a Red Raider has won the award.
Josh Jung was named an All-American by five of six major publications, Grant Little was selected to three All-America teams, Zach Rheams was named an All-American by ABCA All-America and Gabe Holt earned Perfect Game All-America Honorable Mention as well as multiple Freshman All-America honors. Â Â Â Â
2017 – Back-to-back Big 12 Titles
Tech recorded back-to-back Big 12 titles after putting together a 45-17 record on the diamond in 2017, with a 16-8 record in league play. For the second-straight year, the Red Raiders earned the No. 5 National Seed in the NCAA Tournament, which capped off 13 consecutive sellout crowds at Rip Griffin Park to end the season.
Tadlock’s squad picked up multiple All-America accolades, as well as conference recognition. Steven Gingery became the first unanimous first team All-American in program history, while also earning Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and National Pitcher of the Year by the College Baseball Foundation. Hunter Hargrove, an All-American by Collegiate Baseball, received Big 12 Player of the Year honors and Josh Jung, a freshman All-American by three different outlets, garnered Big 12 Freshman of the Year accolades. Grant Little also picked up three freshman All-America bids.
2016 – Big 12 Title & Omaha
The Red Raiders posted their second 45+ win season under Tadlock in 2016, going 47-20 overall, the third-most wins in the program record books. Tech earned its fifth conference title in school history after tallying a 19-5 Big 12 mark and advanced to the College World Series for the second time in three years.
For the first time in program history, the Red Raiders were awarded a national seed for the NCAA Tournament, checking in at No. 5. In Omaha, the Red Raiders recorded their first CWS victory in Tech history after defeating No. 1 Florida, 3-2, in an elimination game. The Red Raiders ended the year ranked fourth in the final poll of the 2016 season, their highest ever in program history.
2015 – Consecutive 30+ win seasons
Tech finished 31-24 overall in Tadlock’s third season in 2015, marking the first time since 2005-06 where the Red Raiders have posted consecutive 30-win seasons. The Red Raiders completed Big 12 play at 13-11 overall, securing a tie for third place in the conference standings, Tech’s highest finish since the 2004 season. It was also the second-straight season where Tech has finished among the top four in the Big 12 standings, a first for the Red Raiders since the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
Over the 2014-15 seasons, Tech combined for 76 victories -- its most over a two-year span since the 2001 and 2002 seasons (85 wins). In addition, the Red Raiders also combined for 27 wins in Big 12 play, their most since those same two seasons. Tadlock picked up his 100th career win as Tech's head coach late in the 2015 season as the Red Raiders defeated Texas, 5-1, on May 3. Tadlock collected his 100th win in just his 171st game, making him the fastest head coach in school history to reach that mark.
The Red Raiders once again were among the national leaders defensively, ranking 10th in the country for double plays per game and 14th for double plays. Corey Taylor, meanwhile, led the country with a 0.31 ERA, the lowest in both Texas Tech and Big 12 Conference history, after allowing just two earned runs over 57.1 innings. Taylor became the first Red Raider to earn All-America honors in Tadlock's tenure as he was third team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). His selection marked the first time since John Neely in 2011 where a Red Raider pitcher garnered All-America accolades.
Eric Gutierrez joined Taylor in collecting national accolades as he was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Rawlings Gold Glove Team, becoming just the second Red Raider in program history to collect the honor. Gutierrez, one of six Red Raiders also on the All-Big 12 teams, ended his junior year with an impressive .992 fielding percentage.
2014 – Tech’s first CWS Appearance
Tadlock and the Red Raiders completed the biggest turnaround in school history and the second biggest turnaround in Big 12 history, going from 26 wins in 2013 to 45 wins in 2014. The season culminated with Texas Tech’s first trip to the College World Series in Omaha.
The Red Raiders' historic 2014 season included winning 45 games (fourth-most in school history), setting 10 school records, sweeping six series (three Big 12 series) and defeating 12 nationally-ranked programs, including six top-10 teams. Texas Tech spent 18-consecutive weeks in the national rankings, which spanned the entire season, before ending the year with a No. 8 national ranking in the final poll of the year.
Tadlock was named the ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year, the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year and the College Baseball Hall of Fame National Coach of the Year while guiding the Red Raiders to their best season in school history with a 45-21 overall mark and 14-10 Big 12 record. Tech posted just the sixth 40-win regular season in school history while claiming its first-ever NCAA Regional title at the Coral Gables Regional hosted by No. 3 nationally-ranked Miami (Fla.). Tech won the regional with three wins, two of them coming against Miami on its home field.
Tech returned to Lubbock the following week for its first-ever NCAA Super Regional where Red Raider fans sold-out Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park within 40 minutes of tickets going on sale. Tech responded with two thrilling 1-0 shutouts over No. 16 College of Charleston to punch its ticket to Omaha for the first time in school history. On the way, Tech became just the second team in NCAA Super Regional history (since 1999) to post back-to-back shutouts (2002 -- LSU) and is the first team to ever win back-to-back 1-0 games in a Super Regional.
Fan support was at an all-time high prior to the 2014 Super Regional as fans sold out tickets within 40 minutes of going on sale. The series drew 4,811 fans at each of the two games, pushing Tech's average attendance to 3,266 fans per game, its highest average since 2000, after 98,969 fans stepped foot in Rip Griffin Park during the season. Tech ranked 15th nationally in average attendance and 17th for total attendance.
The Red Raider pitching staff shined during the postseason as Tech tied the NCAA all-time record with four shutouts in a postseason,
joining Cal State Fullerton (2004), Pepperdine (1992), Arizona State (1972), Florida State (1970), St. John's (1968) and Wake Forest (1955) as the only teams in college baseball history to tally four shutouts in a single NCAA postseason. In fact, it was the first time since 1976 that the Red Raiders had posted three straight shutouts at any point of the season.
Also in 2014, Tadlock led Tech to 14 league wins -- the program's most since 2004 -- while picking up his 500th collegiate career win in a 3-2 victory over West Virginia in Lubbock on May 16, 2014. Tech tied a school record with 33 home wins (1993) and set a new school record by holding its opponent to two or fewer runs 30 times (25-5 record). Tech also set the following school records in 2014 -- shutouts (9), ERA during aluminum bat era (since 1974, 3.11), fielding percentage (.980), ERA in Big 12 games (4.09), games played (66), innings pitched (587.2), putouts (1,763) and assists (809).
The Red Raiders were solid in all three phases during Tadlock's second season as head coach. Tech ranked among the Big 12's top three in 12 statistical categories while leading the league in slugging percentage and triples and finishing second in the conference in runs, hits, doubles, home runs and RBI.
Outfielder Tyler Neslony became the first Red Raider to lead the Big 12 in batting (.375) while first baseman Eric Gutierrez led the league in home runs (12) and RBI (58), becoming just the second Red Raider to accomplish that feat in the Big 12 era and the first since 2004. Second baseman Bryant Burleson and outfielder/designated hitter Adam Kirsch tied for the Big 12 lead in doubles (21) while Kirsch, the 2014 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year (second time a Red Raider to earn award), led the league in slugging percentage (.560), just ahead of Gutierrez (.539).
Tech finished third in the country in triples (26) and ranked sixth in both double plays turned (65) and fielding percentage (.980). Overall, the Red Raiders ranked among the top-30 in the country in 10 different statistical categories.
Tadlock guided the Red Raiders to a 16-game home win streak to end the 2014 season -- a new school record for consecutive home wins to complete the season. That streak was also the longest active home win streak in the nation to end the 2014 season. The accolades and honors poured in for the Red Raiders in 2014 with six players selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft or signing a free agent contract with an MLB organization following the draft. A pair of players -- both whom had not been drafted previously in their careers -- were selected in the top-10 rounds with left-handed pitcher Chris Sadberry going in the sixth round (Miami Marlins) and catcher Hunter Redman taken in the eighth round (Los Angeles Dodgers).
For the first time in school history the Red Raiders had a pair of Freshman All-America selections in consecutive seasons -- both under Tadlock as head coach -- as left-handed pitcher Dylan Dusek and Stephen Smith received the honor in 2014. The previous year, Eric Gutierrez and Jarrard Poteete were selected as two of the top freshmen in the country. The Red Raiders had six All-Big 12 selections in 2014, including three first-team picks -- a first for Tech since 2004. Tech also had three All-Big 12 second team selections, one Big 12 All-Freshman Team (Stephen Smith) member, the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year (Kirsch), three Academic All-Big 12 honorees, two ABCA All-Midwest Regional selections and Tyler Neslony who was named a finalist for the Gregg Olson Breakout Player of the Year Award. Tech had three Big 12 Player of the Week picks and had three players named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
2013 – First Season as Head Coach
Texas Tech's quick turnaround was built off the groundwork laid in Tadlock's first season in 2013. Faced with the youngest team in the country that featured a nation-leading 22 newcomers, Tadlock and his coaching staff developed their young roster throughout the season as the Red Raiders won eight of their final 14 games.
The Red Raiders won their Big 12 Conference series opener, taking two of three games over Texas in Austin. It marked the first time Tech had won a series over the Longhorns in Austin since 2001 and was Tech's first series win over Texas since 2002.
The Red Raiders knocked off five nationally-ranked opponents in Tadlock's first season, including defending national champion Arizona in Tucson. Tech also strung together three-consecutive wins over ranked opponents during the year -- a first by the Red Raiders in 11 years.
Tech broke the all-time school record for fielding percentage and double plays turned in a season (68) during Tadlock's opening year alone as the Red Raiders finished 26-30 overall and 9-15 in Big 12 play, a two-win improvement against conference foes from the previous year.
Tadlock mentored four All-Big 12 selections (one All-Freshman team pick), four Academic All-Big 12 picks and three Major League Baseball Draft picks, including fifth rounder right-handed pitcher Trey Masek.
2012 – Tadlock Returns to Tech
Tadlock returned to his alma mater for the 2012 season as the program’s associate head coach and recruiting coordinator.  During his one season in this role, the Red Raiders had a school-record nine MLB Draft picks, including first-round selection center fielder Barrett Barnes, who became the third highest draft pick in school history with the 45th overall pick. The nine MLB Draft picks in 2012 ranked second in the nation only behind Arizona State's 10 draft selections. The nine draft picks marked the fifth most in Big 12 history.
2006-2011 - Oklahoma
Tadlock served six successful seasons as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma from 2006-2011. Tadlock produced several of the nation’s top recruiting classes while an assistant coach at Oklahoma, helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since 1995. During his time in Norman, Tadlock helped the Sooners to five NCAA Tournament trips, marking their first time making five postseason appearances in a six year span since 1987-1992.
OU experienced unparalleled success at the plate under Tadlock’s guidance, hitting over .300 all six seasons – first time since 1995-00. His 2009 and 2010 clubs combined for 195 home runs, the most ever at Oklahoma in consecutive years, and led the Big 12 both seasons. In 2011, Tadlock coached 11 players who were selected in the MLB Draft, a total that matched the all-time Big 12 record at the time set by Texas in 2007.
Key to his success at Oklahoma, Tadlock produced several of the top recruiting classes in Norman. His 2006 recruiting class ranked fourth nationally by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the best OU class since 1987. Tadlock also had top-25 classes by Baseball America in 2006 (11th), 2009 (16th), 2010 (21st) and 2012 (13th). The 2012 class at OU received a No. 4 ranking by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Grayson – Back-to-back NJCAA World Series Titles
After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College (1993-96) for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and 2000. During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a 435-127 (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs (1999-2000).
Playing Career
After a prep career at Denton High School and two years at Hill College, Tadlock was a two-year starting shortstop for the Red Raiders while helping Texas Tech to its first-ever 40-win season as a senior in 1991 (42-18). In his two-year career at Tech, Tadlock played in 120 games, batted .289 (120-for-415) with 96 runs scored, 19 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 68 RBI, 71 walks, 65 strikeouts and was 28-of-41 in stolen bases.
