DeShaun Foster
- Title:
- Running Backs
Former NFL standout DeShaun Foster enters his first season as Texas Tech’s running back coach after being tabbed to the position on March 2, 2016.
Foster arrives at Texas Tech after spending three seasons in various roles at his alma mater, UCLA. He began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant on Jim Mora’s staff in 2013 before being promoted to a graduate assistant in 2014 and then Director of Player Development and High School Relations in 2015.
The Bruins were among the top programs in the country during Foster’s tenure assisting with the running backs as UCLA went 28-11 overall with three bowl appearances during that span.
Foster joined the coaching profession shortly after a successful seven-year career in the NFL with both the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco Giants. He recorded over 4,500 yards of total offense during his career after rushing for 3,570 yards while picking up another 1,129 yards through the air.
Foster’s successful pro numbers came after he missed his rookie season due to a preseason injury. Foster, a second-round selection by the Panthers in the 2002 NFL Draft, recovered to rush for over 600 combined yards during Carolina’s playoff run the following year.
Possibly the highlight of Foster’s career came in Super Bowl XXXVIII when he rushed 33 yards into the endzone to cut Carolina’s deficit against the New England Patriots to 21-16 early in the fourth quarter. It remains the fifth-longest touchdown run by a player in Super Bowl history.
Foster put together his best three professional seasons from 2005-07 to close his career with the Panthers. He surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career in 2005 as he combined for 1,084 yards on the ground during the regular season and two playoff games.
Foster rushed for over 100 yards in back-to-back games late in the year, totaling 165 yards in the regular-season finale with Atlanta before pounding out 151 yards in Carolina’s 23-0 shutout of the New York Giants to open the NFC playoffs.
Foster followed with 897 yards the following year in 2006, his most ever during the regular season. He closed his tenure with the Panthers with 876 yards in 2007 before signing with the San Francisco 49ers the following year. The 2008 season marked his final year in the NFL as he rushed for 234 yards and a touchdown with the 49ers.
Before embarking on his pro career, Foster was one of the top running backs in UCLA history. A native of Charlotte, N.C., Foster completed his four-year career in Los Angeles with 3,194 yards, third-most in UCLA history. He also ranked second for career touchdowns (44) and fifth in career points (266).
A two-time All-Pac 10 first team honoree, Foster totaled 13 career 100-yard performances from 1998-01 which ranks sixth all-time in UCLA history. Foster earned his undergraduate degree in history in spring of 2014.
