B.J. Johnson
- Title:
- Offensive Graduate Assistant
B.J. Johnson enters his first season on the Texas Tech football staff as he was named an offensive graduate assistant in February 2020. He will work with the Red Raiders’ inside receivers and tight ends.
With his hire, Johnson will return to the offensive side of the ball after previously serving as a defensive graduate assistant at Colorado for the 2020 season. The Buffaloes finished 4-2 during the COVID-19 shortened season en route to an appearance in the Valero Alamo Bowl.
Prior to his stint in Boulder, Johnson served as the wide receivers coach at Savannah State in 2019 under its first-year head coach, Shawn Quinn. The Tigers were 7-3 overall that season, marking their first winning season in 22 seasons. Savannah State was a perfect 5-0 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play but was unable to play for the league championship as it was transitioning to the NCAA Division II level.
Johnson joined the coaching ranks following one season as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Woodruff High School in South Carolina. He was a two-time All-State performer while a football athlete at Woodruff where he set all major school single-season and career receiving records after recording 165 receptions for 2,780 yards and 30 touchdowns.
His success at the high school level led to a scholarship at Georgia Southern (2013-16) where he lettered for four years as a wide receiver. He concluded his career with 93 receptions for 1,338 yards and six touchdowns, averaging a healthy 14.4 yards per catch. He was a member of the school’s 2015 GoDaddy Bowl championship team that defeated Bowling Green.
Johnson was later signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Francisco 49ers and had made the team before a serious hamstring injury suffered in practice during th first week of the 2017 regular season cut his career short. He began his coaching career shortly following.
