The 2025 football season will mark Roger Lira’s 10th on the Texas Tech sidelines as an assistant equipment manager. This is Lira’s second stint on the Texas Tech after returning to the equipment staff in 2021.
Lira assists with all aspects of Texas Tech’s equipment operations, including issuing of official adidas apparel and helping coordinate headset communications on gameday. He is also part of the advance team that prepares the Red Raiders’ arrival for any road trip. In addition to assisting with the day-to-day duties for football, he also oversees the equipment operations for the Red Raider softball program.
Lira has risen from a student assistant to graduate assistant to a full-time role in his decade-plus on the equipment staff. Lira began his tenure at Texas Tech as a student assistant prior to the 2009 season. He was tabbed a graduate assistant in 2013 and then was hired to a full-time role the following season.
In between his two stints, Lira was an assistant coach and teacher at nearby Brownfield High School from 2018 until his return prior to spring practices in 2021. Lira, who was also the career and technical education (CTE) department head, oversaw the linebackers room while with the Cubs and was the offensive coordinator during his final season. He also assisted with the Brownfield basketball and track and field programs over his nearly three years.
Lira, a native of nearby Shallowater, earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science and a minor in secondary education from Texas Tech in 2013. He added a master’s in instructional and educational technology from the university in 2015.
