Randy Ward joined his wife in Lubbock for the 2021 season as the associate head coach after five seasons at Loyola Marymount.
During his first season with the Red Raiders, Ward helped the Texas Tech defense record the best fielding percentage in program history (.975) with just 31 errors.Â
As the primary hitting coach for the Red Raiders, Ward helped make Texas Tech history with the largest program win defeating Tarleton State 23-0. The Red Raider offense tallied 18 hits on a .580 clip with 22 RBI in the contest and tied the NCAA record for grand slams in a game (3) and grand slams in an inning (2). Senior Karli Hamilton also tied the NCAA record for grand slams in a game by an individual with two. The Red Raiders recorded nine games with 10+ hits and seven multi-homer games in the 2021 season.
Prior to his time in Lubbock in the shortened 2020 season, Ward helped lead the Lions to back-to-back wins against ranked opponents defeating No. 4 LSU and No. 13 Michigan at the Judy Garman Classic. The Lions finished the shortened season first in the West Coast Conference in batting average (.299) and runs scored (122).
In 2019, Ward helped the Lion’s hitters lead the league in doubles (94) while posting a team batting average of .274, second best in the conference. Three LMU hitters finished the season with averages above .300, led by Molly Grumbo who posted a .344 clip with a conference-leading 65 hits on her way to First Team All-West Coast Conference honors.
During the Lion’s 2018 NISC Championship campaign, two of Ward’s hitters, Delanie Wisz and Alicia Brown finished tops of the conference in home runs. Brown also led the WCC in doubles with 13 on the season.
In his first season at LMU, Ward coached the Lions hitters to a successful 2016 season as the team led the nation in doubles (106) and finished first in the conference in batting average (.309), slugging percentage (.515), on base percentage (.387), and home runs (60). Lions slugger Meghan Von Behren led the league in batting average, posting a .421 clip with 75 hits, 11 home runs and a .680 slugging percentage.Â
Prior to his time at LMU Ward made stops at Academy of Art University, Saint Mary’s, North Dakota and University of Northern Iowa. Ward made his coaching debut as the assistant coach at North Iowa Area Community college before becoming the head coach at Nora Springs Rock Falls High School in Nora Springs, Iowa.Â
Ward graduated with a bachelor’s degree in family services from Northern Iowa in 2005. He is married to Red Raiders’ head coach Sami Ward. They have two daughters, Ryli and Hayli.Â
