Jeremy O’Brien is in his third year as Assistant Director of Athletics Communications for the Red Raiders. He handles social media and media relations for Texas Tech’s soccer and track & field/cross country programs.
O’Brien comes to Tech from Miami University (Ohio), where he worked in the athletic communications office for all four years of his undergrad. During his junior and senior years with the RedHawks, he was the primary contact for the men’s and women’s track & field/cross country program. O’Brien hosted the 2017 Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships in addition to several home meets. He also served a year as the primary contact for the men’s golf team. Miami’s athletic communications staff was named to the FWAA’s “Super 11” field of sports information departments during his junior and senior years.
O'Brien also has experience in professional baseball. He served as a Baseball Analysis & Communications Intern for the Toledo Mud Hens – the Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers – during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He managed social media, published releases and compiled statistics for home and visiting clubhouses in addition to handling press relations in his time with the Hens.
In January of 2018, O’Brien appeared as a guest on the popular Work in Sports Podcast after conducting research on the academic backgrounds of Division I FBS athletic directors. His article, “A Look at Who’s Leading America’s Big-Time College Athletic Departments,” provided insight into the most popular degrees, levels of education and alma maters among DI FBS athletic directors.
O’Brien was also a student-athlete at Miami. He was a pitcher for the Miami University Hamilton baseball team during his freshman and sophomore years. He appeared in 22 games in his career, recording one win and two saves with 20 strikeouts in 21.2 innings. He was named Academic All-Conference his freshman year and helped the Harriers to an ORCC Championship his sophomore year.
A native of Toledo, Ohio, O’Brien earned his bachelor's in Management & Leadership with a minor in Sport Management from Miami in May of 2018. In April of 2020, he was named a nominee for Miami's "18 of the Last 9" award, which honors young alumni.
He resides in Lubbock.
