LUBBOCK, Texas - Halfway through what he called a ?good week of hard practices?, Texas Tech head coach Spike Dykes was pleased with his team?s effort Wednesday as preparations continued for Saturday?s Big 12 contest at Baylor.
?It was a pretty good practice, nothing to brag about, but we did okay,? Dykes said. ?We are finally getting over the soreness of the weekend and it looks like we will be ready to go.?
The Red Raiders utilized the grass practice fields just southeast of Jones Stadium for the second consecutive day, working for close to two hours on position and team groups against Baylor schemes. As usual, the kicking game was also a major focus during the workout.
Texas Tech will return to the closed confines of Jones Stadium for what Dyke?s called a ?game review? on Thursday. The Red Raiders will hold a brief walk-through Friday afternoon before boarding a charter flight for Waco.
Texas Tech is 3-3 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play following a 31-10 victory over Colorado last week. Baylor is 1-5 and 0-3 coming off an open date.
While Dykes has been pleased with his club?s work ethic through Wednesday, the week has also been a productive one for the Red Raiders off the field.
Sophomore free safety Kevin Curtis was named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week Wednesday after nabbing Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday. Freshman running back Shaud Williams was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and then drew a ?special mention? from the Compaq College Plays of the Week for his 230-yard rushing performance against Colorado.
There will be no television for the Tech-Baylor game, but Red Raider fans can listen to the game on their local All Sports Radio Network affiliate or via the Internet at www.texstech.com.
