LUBBOCK, Texas - Mario Layne led an early Texas Tech charge and the Red Raiders never looked back in a 66-51 exhibition win over the Arkansas Express Thursday.
Texas Tech, playing the first of two exhibition games in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum, overcame the chill factor early in the game when senior Mario Layne hit a five-foot jumper with 14:24 remaining to give Tech a 7-2 early lead. Tech would rattle off 10 points in the final three minutes, which included six Andy Ellis free throws, to take a 29-19 lead at the half.
Senior guard Rayford Young got things going for Tech in the second half after nailing a three-pointer with 12:13 remaining to ignite a 9-3 run by the Red Raiders. Young, a second team All-Big 12 selection last season, finished with 10 points on the evening.
The Red Raiders turned to posts Andy Ellis and Mario Layne who combined for 16 second half points and finished the night with 16 and 13 points respectively. In all, four Tech players finished in double figures Layne (16), Ellis (13), James Ware (13) and Young (10).
Tech returns to exhibition action on Monday night when they face Global Sports at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum at 7:00 p.m.
