Texas Tech Volleyball Defeats Iowa State 3-0

AMES, Iowa - The Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated the Iowa State Cyclones in volleyball action tonight at Hilton Coliseum to end a three-game losing streak. The Raiders won the match 15-5, 15-10, 15-3 to improve to 16-12 (5-10 Big 12) on the year while the Cyclones fell to 2-20 (0-15).
Texas Tech opened up the first game with a 1-0 lead. The teams traded serves until Bonny Smith served the Red Raiders to four straight points before the Cyclones were able to end the run. It was a deficit the Cyclones wouldn't be able to overcome. A key to the Red Raiders' early success was the frontline blocking of Lori Garber, Ann Romjue and Colleen Smith. The score was 6-0 before the Cyclones were able to get on the board. Tech remained in control for most of the game as the Cyclones never pulled closer than 8-4. The Red Raiders were able to close it out for a 15-5 victory. Romjue, Garber and Yolanda Cumbess led the Raiders with four kills apiece.
In the second game Tech was unable to build a big lead quick but pulled ahead 10-6 later in the game. Iowa State never went away and pulled to within two points on a couple of occasions but Tech was able to fend off every Cyclone rally and win the game 15-10. Ann Romjue led Tech with seven kills on .235 hitting (7-3-17) and also added eight digs. Sarah Rollman led ISU with 4 kills.
Tech opened the third game strong, going ahead 6-0 before ISU could score a point point. However, Tech wouldn't allow the Cyclones to hang around this time as they closed out the match with a 15-3 win.
For the game the Raiders outhit the Cyclones .289 (49-16-114) to .047 (28-23-107). Romjue led both teams with 16 kills and also added a total of 12 digs. Cumbess and Garber also notched double-digit kills for the Raiders, registering 11 and 10 respectively.
