LUBBOCK, Texas - In a game that was over almost before it started, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders defeated the Southwest Texas State Bobcats 102-44 before 12,156 fans at the United Spirit Arena tonight, running their record to 3-0 on the season. The Bobcats drop to 2-1.
"This was a good game for us," Texas Tech coach Marsha Sharp said after the game. "We're beginning to get an idea of how to play together. I was pleased with how the team handled things tonight."
The Lady Raiders got career highs from several players in the victory. Aleah Johnson had a career high 21 points and Plenette Pierson also set a career high with 20 points. Keitha Dickerson notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The players set these career highs despite spending the majority of the second half on the bench. The Bobcats shot a dismal 25.5 percent from the floor in the game while the Lady Raiders had nothing but hot hands, shooting a total of 53.2 percent as well as 36.4 percent from behind the three-point arc.
A particularly telling statistic in the game was that the Lady Raiders held the Bobcats without a made field goal for a full 15 minutes and five seconds at one point during the game. With 7:43 left to play in the first half, Sarah Dodds hit a jumper for Southwest Texas to make the score 32-14 in favor of Tech. The Bobcats would not make another shot from the field until Amber Morrow nailed a jumper at the 12:38 mark in the second half. By this point the score was 75-21 in favor of Tech and the game was already out of hand.
The Lady Raiders came out in the second half and went on a 20-0 run. From that point the reserves saw most of the minutes until the end of the game.
