LUBBOCK, Texas - Steve Sullivan has been named associate athletic director for external operations, according to an announcement by Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers. Sullivan comes to Texas Tech from the University of Arizona, where he served as Director of Marketing and Corporate Relations since 1994.
?We are really excited about Steve joining our administrative athletic staff,? Myers said. ?This is a new position, but having someone in this capacity is a long-time coming for Texas Tech athletics.
?For some time now we have needed someone to tie all our external affairs into one package and get us headed in the same direction,? Myers said. ?I believe Steve is the right person to spearhead this for us and I look forward to dividends in the future.?
Sullivan is charged with funneling all of Texas Tech athletics? marketing, promotions, as well as corporate and public relations plans into one concerted effort. He will be in charge of negotiating broadcast and other multi-media rights for Red Raider sports as well.
?The opportunity to integrate these external units and generate revenue for the athletic department is a challenge that I am looking forward to,? Sullivan said. ?I believe the potential here is outstanding with the new United Spirit Arena and improvements to Jones Stadium on the horizon.
?With staff changes and new opportunities throughout the athletic department, the time is right to begin a new plan for not only generating revenues, but generating awareness for Texas Tech athletics,? Sullivan said. ?Enhancing the atmosphere at Tech sporting events is a top priority, and we are going to enlist the student body as a leader in this effort.?
Sullivan will supervise marketing and promotion staff members at Texas Tech, and is already working closely with the ticket office, media and public relations and Red Raider head coaches to develop and coordinate marketing and promotional strategies for all sports programs.
Sullivan has been at Arizona since 1992, serving as assistant director of marketing and promotions before being elevated to director of marketing and corporate relations. Prior to that he served as assistant director of marketing and promotions at the University of Connecticut (1990-92).
After earning his Bachelor of Science Degree from Arizona in 1987, Sullivan earned his Master?s in Sports Administration from Saint Thomas University in 1990.
Sullivan and his wife, Carleen, are expecting their first child in February.
