Baseball Takes Final Kansas Matchup

LAWRENCE, Kansas - Texas Tech took advantage of three Kansas errors in the top of the ninth inning and used a 9-hit complete game by starter Jesse Cornejo to defeat Kansas 7-4 Sunday in Lawrence, Kansas. With the win, Texas Tech improves to 29-13 overall and 10-7 in the Big 12 while Kansas drops to 17-18 overall and 4-11 in the conference.
Cornejo (7-3) scattered nine hits and four runs over nine innings for the victory. He struck out eight batters and walked only two in his complete game victory.
Kansas rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the eighth inning to tie the game at 4-4. The first Tech batter in the ninth inning, Ryan Ruiz walked to get on first. An catching error by the Kansas shortstop advanced Ruiz to second and put Brennan Burns, who was trying to sacrifice bunt on first base. On the next play, a Kevin Jordan ground ball was botched by Kansas advancing both runners while Ruiz scored on an overthrow by the KU rightfielder and Burns scored. Josh Bards double drove in Jordan for a 7-4 lead.
Bard finished the game at 3-5 with three RBI, Jordan went 1-4 with two runs scored, Ryan Ruiz went 0-1 with two walks and two sacrifice bunts and Brennan Burns scored two runs.
