The Red Raiders led 5-1 before falling 18-8 in seven innings
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Down 1-0, Texas Tech Baseball scored five runs to take a 5-1 lead before seeing BYU score 17 of the final 21 runs in Tuesday's 18-8 (7 Inning) run-rule loss to BYU at Surprise Stadium in the Opening Round of the 2026 Big 12 Tournament.
In the setback, senior Tracer Lopez went 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs driven in, while Logan Hughes hit a 460-foot home run, walked three times and walked twice.
Looking to get off to a fast start and set the tone, Texas Tech (27-28) got a pair of walks to put two on with two outs but a flyout to right-center ended the mini threat.
After senior Jonny Lowe tossed a scoreless first, the Red Raiders got a lead-off walk, but BYUs (28-27) Blake Paragus used a 5-4-3 double play to end the frame.
In the second, BYU got an RBI double to take a 1-0 led, but Lowe used a caught stealing and flyout to limit the damage.
Looking to respond, the Red Raiders hung their 69th and final crooked number of the season striking for five runs on a two-run triple by Lopez, the two-run homer from Hughes and a 111 MPH double from catcher Matt Quintanar.
Turning to redshirt freshman Logan Addison, the Red Raiders hung the first out of the inning on the board before BYU used an infield single to spark a three-run third that cut the Tech lead to 5-4.
The Cougars ultimately took the lead in the home half of the fourth inning on a solo home run from catcher Ridge Erickson and a two-run blast from first baseman Ezra McNaughton. The homer was one of two that Erickson would hit on the night, as the backstop went 2-for-4 and drove in three.
Down 7-5, the Red Raiders pulled to within 7-6 when an RBI double from freshman Linkin Garcia scored Logan Hughes from first.
With Garcia on second representing the tying run, BYUs Justis Reiser stranded Garcia on a pop-up and a ground out.
After a lead-off home run from Easton Jones made it 8-6 Cougs, the Red Raiders used two strikeouts to limit the damage.
Down by two, the Red Raiders used an RBI single from Lopez and a wild pitch in the sixth to tie the game at eight. Â
Locked in a tie game, the Red Raiders saw BYU strike for seven runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to close out the run-rule win.
In the loss, Hughes recorded his 37th home run to move into ninth place on the Red Raiders all-time home run list. The blast was his 18th home run of the season.
With his 18-home run season, he now has recorded two of the 11 best home run seasons in program history. Hughes hit 19 long balls a season ago.
