AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 16 Texas (28-16, 13-7 Big 12) and No. 11 Texas Tech (33-9, 14-5 Big 12) combined for 25 runs and 25 hits this afternoon at Disch-Falk Field in the final game of their three-game series, as the Red Raiders claimed a 13-12 victory. Texas Tech struck first as they jumped to an early 11-2 lead, thanks to an eight-run third inning, but Texas regained some momentum by scoring eight runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 11-10. However, the Longhorns were unable to ever take the lead.
Picking up the win was Brandon Roberson (Fort Worth, Texas/Western Hills/Hill JC), the fifth Red Raider pitcher, who pitched 2.2 scoreless innings. After Texas put the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the ninth, Shane Wright (Topeka, Kan./Hayden/Butler County JC) relieved Roberson and induced a game-ending groundout to earn his first save of the year.
The Longhorns were led at the plate by Tommy Nicholson (Anaheim, Calif./Esperanza), who went 3-for-6 with one double, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored, Chris Houser (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville/Navarro JC), who went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and a pair of RBI, and the duo of Jason Moore (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) and Mike Kolbach (Anaheim, Calif./Mater Dei), who each had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
In addition, Moore connected on his ninth home run of the season, tying him for the team lead, while Ben Emond (Farnham, Quebec, Canada/Jean-Jacques Betrand/Seminole JC) recorded two hits for the fourth consecutive game to give him a team-best 21 multiple-hit outings on the year. Suffering the loss was D.J. Jones (Forney, Texas/Forney/Navarro JC), who started the game but did not make it out of the third inning to drop to 6-4 on the year.
Highlighting the game for Texas Tech were David O'Keefe (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart/Canada College), who went 2-for-6 with one double, three RBI, and two runs scored, Ryan Ruiz (El Toro, Calif./El Toro/Saddleback Mission Viejo), who went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, and the tandem of Chaz Eiguren (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield/Seward Country JC) and Jon Weber (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood/Lon Angeles Harbor), who each had two hits and scored twice on the day.
With an announced crowd of 5,503 today, a total of 16,556 fans attended the series, the highest total for a three-game series at Disch-Falk Field in 1999.
