LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech University men's golf team opens the 1998-99 season on Monday when the Red Raiders play at the 1998 Kansas Invitational.
The Red Raiders will join six other Big 12 Conference squads in a 17-team field that will challenge the par-72, 7,096-yard Alvamar Golf Course Monday and Tuesday. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday beginning at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday's 18-hole final round begins at 8:30 a.m.
Kansas is the defending champion. Iowa State and Nebraska, two teams that tied for second last year, are also competing. Baylor was fourth a year ago, while Kansas State finished eighth. The Red Raiders were 14th last season, while Missouri did not compete in the 1997 Kansas Invitational. Other teams competing include Arkansas State, Drake, Illinois State, Missouri-Kansas City, UNC Charlotte, Oral Roberts, Southern Mississippi, Southwestern Louisiana, Texas-Arlington, and Wichita State.
Texas Tech director of golf Jeff Mitchell makes his debut with the men's team after being named to the newly created position last spring. The men's team returns three golfers - Gant Bills, Matt Loving and Philip Tate - who competed for Texas Tech in the Big 12 Conference championships last season.
