LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team will begin their fall season of tournament play on Friday, August 11, with the Red Raider Open.
The tournament, which is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, will include players from New Mexico Military Institute, Abilene Christian University and West Texas A&M University.
Thirty-two players are slated to compete in the singles draw and 16 teams in the doubles bracket. All matches will be held at Lakeridge Country Club in Lubbock and the outdoor tennis courts next to the Athletic Training Center on the Texas Tech campus. The Open championships will be held Sunday morning at the Lakeridge C.C.
"The Red Raider Open is an opportunity for our players to get their feet wet before we continue with tournament play in October," Head Tennis Coach Tim Siegel said. "It will give our coaching staff a chance to see how well the men are playing after the summer months."
The Open will provide an opportunity for many local tennis fans to see sophomore Borut Martincevic (Maribor, Slovenia) play for a first time. Martincevic, who was ineligible last season, won the Slovenian national championship for the under-18 group. He was also a finalist for the Slovenian Davis Cup team.
Also playing in the Open is last season's No. 1 player Peter Danolic (Sarajevo, Bosnia). Danolic compiled a 7-16 record in dual match play at the top position and is expected to make a significant contribution to the team this season.
