LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team has been named one of 64 teams selected to play in the 1999 NCAA men's tennis team championships it was announced today by the NCAA. Texas Tech has a 15-9 record for the season and is ranked 34th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. It is the fourth straight year the team has made the tournament, and the fifth time in Director of Tennis Tim Siegel's seven year tenure at Texas Tech
The Red Raiders will travel to Austin, Texas, to play a first round match against Texas A&M on May 14. The Aggies post a 14-6 record for the spring and are ranked 23rd in the nation. They are coming off a 4-3 defeat to Kansas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament.
The two teams met once this year with Texas A&M defeating Texas Tech by the score of 5-2 in College Station, Texas, on April 1.
"We are excited to be selected to play in the NCAA tournament again," Siegel said. "Texas A&M is a very tough first round match. They defeated us earlier in the year at College Station, and we have a lot of respect for the quality of their program. I feel that if our team plays to level they are capable, we have a great shot to capture a victory."
The winner of the match will face the victor of the University of Texas and Marist in the second round on May 15. The winner of that match will advance to the final rounds to be played at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia on May 22-25.
