ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team defeated the University of Texas-Arlington 5-2 today at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington. The Red Raiders snapped a two-match losing streak and improved their record to 6-2 in 1999 dual match play.
The men opened the contest by sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 1 tandem of Ryan Shupe and Dustin Hawk defeated Christian Jaeger and Andy Leber 8-5. Jevgenij Cariov and Petar Danolic, playing together for the first time this season, defeated Per-Erik Karlsson and Ola Bentzen at No. 2 doubles. The No. 3 team of Adam Baranowski won their match 8-6 over Mattias Larsson and Tomasz Zarzeczny 8-6.
In singles action, Texas Tech took four of the six points. Ryan Shupe at No. 2, No. 3 Jevgenij Cariov, No. 4 Petar Danolic and No. 5 Adam Baranowski all won their matches to guarantee the victory. No. 1 Borut Martincevic was forced to withdraw from his match in the second set due to injuries suffered in the TCU match on Saturday.
"It took a tremendous effort for us to win today," Director of Tennis Tim Siegel said. "Adam and Borut were slowed by injuries, and we were playing on slower outdoor courts for the first time this season. I was satisfied with our performance this weekend. Right now, my main concern is getting our team healthy for the Corpus Christi Invitational next weekend."
