Texas Tech Sweeps Howard With 27-2 Sunday Victory

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raider baseball team finished off Howard on Sunday with a 27-2 victory at Dan Law Field. Texas Tech improved to 4-0 on the young season while Howard dropped to 0-7.
Texas Tech used an eight-run fourth inning and a 10-run sixth inning to defeat Howard for the fourth consecutive game. For the series Texas Tech outscored Howard 81-11, outhit the Bison 74-26 and had 132 total bases to Howard's 43. The Red Raiders batted .465 (74-159) in the four-game series compared to Howard's .197 (26-132).
Saturday, Texas Tech walked 17 times to tie a school record for offensive bases-on-balls.
Junior outfielder Jon Weber led Texas Tech again with a seven-RBI day. He drove in one run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the fourth inning, drove in two more on a fifth inning single and finished off his day with his second grand slam of the weekend, a shot to centerfield. For the first week of the season, Weber finished with a .529 average (9-17) with eight runs scored, four doubles, three home runs (two grand slams), 22 total bases and an incredible 20 runs batted in in four games.
Texas Tech also got solid pitching from starter Kevin Tracey (1-0) who shut out the visiting Bison and limited them to three hits, one walk in six innings pitched. Tracey earned the victory and also struck out four batters. Tech also used five other pitchers in game including freshman Steve Rowe, sophomore Clancy Fossum, senior Zach Stewart, freshman Daniel Cole and junior Chris Sampson.
The Red Raiders also had several other standouts on Saturday's game. Leadoff hitter Marco Cunningham went 2-r with three RBI and three runs scored. He also had a three-RBI double in the fourth inning. Ryan Ruiz went 3-3 with three runs scored, three RBI and two walks, Josh Bard finished 3-4 with three runs and an RBI, Allen Marshall went 3-5 with two RBI and four runs scored, Miles Durham went 4-6 with three runs, a home run and three RBI and David O'Keeffe went 3-5 with three RBI and two runs. Brennan Burns went 1-3 and Chris Sampson added three runs on 1-5 hitting.
Texas Tech (4-0) needed only one more run to tie the school's runs per inning record of 11 in the sixth. Howard broke the shutout with two runs in the ninth inning on a two-run home run by James Perry.
