Texas Tech Tennis Continues Tournament Play

LUBBOCK, Texas - Tournament play will continue this weekend for members of the Texas Tech mens and womens tennis teams. Borut Martincevic (Maribor, Slovenia) and Zana Zlebnik (Maribor, Slovenia) are scheduled to travel to Baltimore, Md. to play in the prestigious National Clay Court Tournament. The maindraw of the tournament features the top 32 mens and womens collegiate players.
Martincevic will begin play on Saturday morning in the tournament pre-qualifier. His last time out, he defeated Shawm Estes in three sets 1-6, 6-1, 7-6, to claim the singles championship of the Red Raider Open. Martincevic, who was ineligible last season as a freshman, is slated to play in the No. 1 position this season for the men.
Zlebnik will begin play on Thursday, Sept. 24, in the first round of the maindraw of the womens bracket. She was recently ranked #43 in the preseason ITA/Rolex collegiate rankings. Last season as a freshman, Zlebnik advanced to the second round of the NCAA singles competition while compiling a 19-6 overall record and 8-3 record in the conference.
Two of Zlebniks teammates, Amanda Earhart (Nashville, Tenn.) and Alenka Ovin (Maribor, Slovenia), travel to Fort Worth to begin play in the TCU Tournament on Friday. Earhart compiled a 10-9 record last year playing mainly in the No. 2 position for the Red Raiders. Ovin, was ineligible last season, comes from Slovenia highly regarded after being one of the top womens players in her country the past several years. The TCU Tournament will run Sept. 18-20.
"We are excited to have Borut and Zana play in the National Clay Courts," Tim Siegel, director of Texas Tech Tennis, said. "The tournament will give them a tremendous amount of experience against some of the nations best players. Also, we look forward to seeing how Amanda and Alenka play at the TCU Tournament. We are counting on both of them to have major roles on this years womens team. Both tournaments will give us an idea about how our teams will look this year."
