LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech women's distance runner Leigh Daniel (Lubbock, Texas) has been one of four women nominated for the 1998-99 Honda Award for track and field to determine the top woman collegiate athlete in the sport it was announced today. Others nominated for the award are Suziann Reid of the University of Texas, Trecia Smith of the University of Pittsburgh and Sielala Sua of the University of California, Los Angeles. The Honda awards program is in its 23rd year of existence. It annually recognizes the top women collegiate athlete in 11 sports.
If selected to receive the award, Daniel would automatically become a candidate for the Honda-Broderick Cup which recognizes the outstanding Collegiate Athlete of the Year. Each of the 11 Honda award winners are considered candidates.
Daniel was the national champion and Big 12 champion in the 5,000 meters during the indoor season. Her NCAA championship time of 16:01.11 is the fastest indoor mark for a collegian in 1999. For the outdoor campaign, she holds the nation's top time in the 10,000 meters and ranks in the top five nationally in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. This past weekend at the Big 12 outdoor championships, she won the conference championships in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters races with new meet record times.
Daniel will run next at the NCAA outdoor championships on June 2-5 in Boise, Idaho. She is scheduled to run in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
