TEMECULA, Calif. - The Texas Tech women's golf team opened the season Monday by shooting an overall 315 in the first round of the Pioneer Electronic Bruin Classic, placing them in a tie for second with Texas Christian University. Oklahoma State University leads the 54-hole event after shooting a total of 297. The twelve team tournament is being held at the Par 72, 6019 yard Menafee Lakes Country Club and is hosted by UCLA.
Tech freshman Jennifer Newhouse was the team's top individual performer, shooting a five-over-par 77, placing her in a tie for 10th. Heather Wrede is one stroke back after firing 40-38=78. The Red Raiders top returning scorer from last year, Brooke Lowrance is tied for 48th following her 40-44=84 opening round performance. The tournament's individual leader is Maria Boden of Oklahoma St. who shot 37-35=72 which leads her OSU teammate Jo Jo Robertson by one stroke.
The three-day tournament will continue with 18 holes on Tuesday, Feb. 23 with the first tee-off time slated for 7:30 am. The event will conclude with an 18 hole shotgun start on Wednesday, Feb. 24 beginning at 8:00 am.
