LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech athletic department announced plans to rescale football ticket prices for 1999 with almost 25 percent of the tickets in Jones Stadium reducing in price from last season. In addition, athletic director Gerald Myers announced a goal to increase the Red Raiders' season ticket base by almost 10,000 tickets.
"Our season ticket base is surprisingly one of the smallest in the Big 12," said athletic director Gerald Myers. "We have set a goal of filling 30,000 seats on a season-ticket basis. If you look around the country and across the Big 12, you will find that the teams with the most success are the ones that have a strong season ticket base. For Texas Tech to continue to compete for Big 12 and national recognition we must increase our support."
"We have rescaled Jones Stadium ticket prices to make attending Texas Tech football games affordable for everyone. The biggest difference in this plan is the simple fact that we have taken into consideration every fan from every economic background. Almost anyone can afford to support Texas Tech football and attend the games."
Season tickets for 1999 are priced in five different categories and range from $69 to $150. Over 12,000 seats have been discounted by 20 percent from regular single-game price for season-ticket buyers. The discount will not be available once the home season begins. Single-game tickets will range from $10 to $35 depending on location and opponent. "One of the things we feel is important is to offer a significant discount for those people buying season tickets," said Myers. "Almost one-quarter of the seats in Jones Stadium have been reduced in price from last season."
Texas Tech averaged 43,256 fans per game last season for six home games at Jones Stadium, the third-highest total in the last 16 seasons. Since joining the Big 12 Conference, Texas Tech has averaged over 41,000 fans per game for three-straight seasons for the first time since 1982. Texas Tech's season-ticket base is approximately 21,000, which includes 10,000 student tickets.
The Red Raiders open the season on the road at Arizona State on Sept. 4 in Tempe, Ariz. Texas Tech's first home game is a Sept. 18 kickoff against North Texas, while the Big 12 opener will come against rival Texas A&M on Oct. 2 in Jones Stadium. Other home games for 1999 include the annual homecoming contest against Colorado on Oct. 16. Family Day is scheduled for Nov. 6 against Iowa State and the season finale is scheduled for Nov. 20 against Oklahoma.
