BATON ROUGE, La. - The Texas Tech men's and women's track and field teams competed today at the LSU Alumni Gold Relays in Baton Rouge, La. For both teams, it was one of their strongest efforts so far this outdoor season.
Competing for the first time since March 27, women's distance runner Leigh Daniel showed no signs of rust. The junior won the 1,500 meters with a NCAA championships provisional qualifying time of 4:23.71. It is the second different race that Daniel has qualified for the championships in this season. Ngozi Iwu put together another solid effort taking fourth in both the 200 and 400 meter dashes with times of 23.93 and 55.55 respectively. Women's pole vaulter Sha Bloxom finished third in competition with a vault of 3.05 meters.
On the men's side the sprinters continued to shine. Shameron Turner continued his strong effort in the 200 meters with a second place finish at the meet with a time of 20.96. Another second place effort was put in by the men's 4X400 relay team of Turner, Rohan McDonald, Scott Jesko and Desmond Johnson. McDonald and Johnson had earlier taken third and fourth in the 400 meter dash with times of 46.95 and 47.00.
Men's distance runner Boniface Ndungu just missed a provisional qualifying time in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:52.52 and a third place finish.
"I feel like both teams put in a solid effort today," Director of Track and Field Greg Sholars said. "Leigh Daniel and Boniface Ndungu both did a great job leading our distance runners. Ngozi Iwu and our men's sprinters also had quality performances. We must build upon this at next weekend's competition."
Both the men's and women's teams will travel to Philadelphia, Penn. next weekend to compete in the prestigious Penn Relays.
