LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech University head mens basketball coach James Dickey announced today that Alvin Brooks has been named an assistant coach on the Red Raider coaching staff. Brooks fills the void left by Greg Pinkney, who resigned earlier this month to pursue private business.
"I am excited to have this opportunity to be at Texas Tech and, in particular, have the opportunity to work with James Dickey," Brooks said. "This a great time to be at Texas Tech. The Big 12 is one of the premier conferences in the country and we will be showcased in one of the top on-campus arenas in the country this season when the United Spirit Arena opens."
Brooks comes to Tech after taking a year hiatus from the game. He last served as head coach at the University of Houston during the 1993-98 seasons. Brooks compiled a 54-84 record during that span, including a 17-10 mark in 1996. The Houston native received his coaching start as an assistant at Lamar University, his alma mater, in 1981. Brooks helped guide the Cardinals to a 114-37 record in five seasons, including two Southland Conference championships and five postseason tournament appearances. He moved on to Houston as an assistant in 1986 as the Cougars posted a 142-73 record during his seven seasons prior to accepting the head position in 1993.
"Alvin is a great addition to our program," Dickey said. "He is a tremendous person, coach and recruiter. Alvin brings experience and a wealth of recruiting contacts. I am excited about working with him."
Brooks graduated from Lamar in 1981 following a stellar playing career. He was the Cardinals starting point guard on the 1980 NCAA Sweet Sixteen team. He began his collegiate playing career at Sam Houston State, where he earned Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 1978 after averaging 14.1 points and 5.2 assists per game. He still holds the SHSU single-season assists record with 165. He transferred to Henderson County Junior College for his sophomore season, before enrolling at Lamar.
