LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech University head men?s basketball coach James Dickey announced today that Will Flemons has been named assistant basketball for the upcoming 1999-2000 season. Flemons joins Alvin Brooks and Shanon Hays, who were hired as assistant coaches earlier this summer.
?We?re excited and pleased to have Will return to our staff,? Dickey said. ?He was a quality player and coach and we look forward to his dedication. Will was an extremely hard-working player who has carried that work ethic over to his professional career.?
Flemons will be primarily involved with individual workouts, scouting opponents, on-campus recruiting and on-floor coaching duties. Flemons competed for the Red Raiders from 1990-93 and is seventh on the all-time scoring list at Tech with 1,604 career points. He set school records in season field goal percentage (62.2% in 1992-93) and for single-game blocked shots with seven and was a two-time unanimous First-Team All-Southwest Conference selection. He led the Red Raiders to the NCAA Tournament during his senior season and earned SWC Offensive Player of the Year and SWC MVP honors during his career.
?I definitely feel a sense of pride coming back to Texas Tech,? Flemons said. ?This is a great situation which is going to be beneficial for me and my family to reach my goal of becoming a collegiate head coach.
?I appreciate Coach Dickey and Texas Tech for this wonderful opportunity.?
Flemons comes to the University from All Saints Episcopal School in Lubbock, where he has served as a basketball coach, health and physical education teacher for two years and as athletic director for one. Flemons earned his degree in exercise and sports management from Texas Tech in 1993.
