September 10, 1999 | Men's Golf
Sept. 10, 1999
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech will be part of the 18-team field early next week at the 1999 SFA Crown Classic in Lufkin, Texas. Stephen F. Austin State University is the host for the 54-hole event.
Collegiate teams representing the Western Athletic, Big 12, Mid-Continent, Sun Belt and Southland conferences will compete in the tournament, which is set to begin on Mon., Sept. 13 and run through Tue., Sept. 14.
?We are entering this event following a strong finish last year,? Red Raider head coach Jeff Mitchell said. ?We played well against a competitive field, but we have to be careful about making comparisons between this year and last.
?At this point, I?m more concerned about where we are when we compete in the Big 12 Championship at the end of the season. We aren?t worried about where we start, but where we finish. That is our long-term goal.?
A wealth of youth and talent has Mitchell ready to get the season underway. ?I am very excited about what I see as a new beginning for our men?s golf program,? Mitchell said. ?We have a lot of new faces and young talent and I?m ready to watch them develop.?
The Crown Colony Country Club (par 72, 6,996 yards) is the home site for the event. The Red Raiders finished fourth in the 18-team field last fall for their best finish of the 1998-99 season.
Baylor will join tech as the two representatives from the Big 12. Other teams in the field include San Jose State, Rice, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas-Little Rock, Oral Roberts, UT-San Antonio, Lamar, McNeese State, Nicholls State, Sam Houston State, Louisiana-Monroe (formerly Northeast Louisiana University) and Southwest Texas State. UT-Pan American is the lone independent school in the tournament.
