LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech looks to improve on last season?s third-place finish at the Big 12 Championships next week when the team begins play in the Big 12 Preview in Lincoln, Neb. Tech finished last season?s postseason tournament behind Texas and Oklahoma State.
?We definitely have a legitimate chance to finish in the top three of this event,? Jeff Mitchell, Texas Tech Director of Golf, said. ?That is definitely our goal. Texas and Oklahoma State are going to be tough to beat.?
Last season?s advancement to the NCAA West Regional combined with a talented list of returning players has Mitchell excited about getting the season underway.
?We have a nice combination of returning players with good credentials and new players with tremendous enthusiasm,? Mitchell said. ?We have the potential to be a top 20 team early in the season. We have a strong nucleus of talent and qualifying for tournaments is going to be as competitive as it has ever been.
?Jamie Vannoy, Priscilla Hunt and Jennifer Newhouse are going to end up being three of the best players in the Big 12. Jamie has an opportunity to be an All-American this season.?
Vannoy is the top returnee from 1998-99 after posting 77.5 strokes per round and three top 10 finishes. Newhouse was third on the team with 79.3 strokes per round and earned three top 20 finishes, while Hunt average 82.1 strokes per round.
