Individuals Headline Tournaments for Men's Tennis Teams

LUBBOCK, Texas - Members of the Red Raider men's tennis team get their first real action of the season in the next couple of weeks as they head to tournaments in Houston and Baltimore.
Borut Martincevic and Ryan Shupe, the team's top two singles players, will travel to Houston and compete in the River Oaks Tennis Invitational, which runs from Friday through Sunday. The tournament features 16 of the top players in District 6, Texas Tech's competitive district.
Martincevic, a junior from Maribor, Slovenia, is currently ranked No. 51 in the country in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association pre-season poll released yesterday. Shupe, a senior from Greensboro, N.C., was the team's No. 2 singles player last season when he finished with a record of 12-9.
Men's No. 3 singles player Jevgenij Cariov will travel to Baltimore and begin pre-qualifying play at he ITA Clay Court Championships on Friday, September 17. Shupe and Martincevic, who are already pre-qualified, will began play at the ITA Clay Courts on Tuesday, September 21.
"The ITA Clay courts is a great way for us to start," said men's tennis coach Tim Siegel. "There will be a lot of good players there. Really, I'm excited about our whole team this year. We've got eight guys who can play and we're ready to see how well we can do."
The fall tennis season features a number of open and invitational tournaments where individual athletes from different schools can compete. The Texas Tech men, who have made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, begin team play in February of 2000.
