Freshmen Lead Tech at Crown Colony

LUBBOCK, Texas - Freshman Trey Pyka posted a three-round 222 in his first collegiate event and finished in a two-way tie for first place as defending champion Texas Tech finished third at The Crown Classic in Lufkin, Texas, Tuesday.
The Red Raiders finished behind champion Lamar and runner-up Baylor. Tournament host Stephen F. Austin, Rice, Arkansas-Little Rock, North Texas, Sam Houston State, Texas-San Antonio and Oral Roberts round out the top 10 in the 18-team event.
Pyka opened the tournament with a 1-under 71 on the par 72, 6,692-yard Crown Colony Country Club course. The San Antonio native shot a 77 in the second round, but bounced back with a closing round of 74. Fellow freshman Mark Hull finished in a tie for sixth place with a three-round total of 224, while sophomore David Bolen shot 231 to earn a top 20 finish. Junior Corey Henegar and freshman Brooks Kelly posted totals of 236 and 241, respectively, to finish tied for 37th and 50th.
