LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - James Ware hit two 3-pointers in a 40-second span, helping Texas Tech fight off Centenary and claim a 51-41 victory Monday.
Ware, who finished with 10 points, made his first 3-pointer at the 4:21 mark, giving the Red Raiders (9-3) a 45-37 lead. Moments later, Ware's second 3-pointer found the mark, and Tech had a comfortable 48-37 lead that held up the rest of the way.
Centenary (5-9) fought back from a 25-18 halftime deficit, pulling within 39-35 on a pair of free throws by Ed Dotson with 8:45 remaining, but the Gents could get no closer.
Tech pushed its halftime margin to 37-27 in the opening stages of the second half when Rayford Young converted back-to-back 3-pointers. The Gents refused to go away, fighting back within 37-33 at the 10:56 mark.
Young was the only other Red Raider player in double figures with 14 points. Andy Ellis grabbed 11 rebounds and scored nine for Tech.
Ronnie McCollum led Centenary with 20 points.
