LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raiders men's tennis team opens up their season Thursday afternoon when they play the Abilene Christian Wildcats at the Athletic Training Center on the Texas Tech campus. The match is set for a 2 p.m. start.
"We're excited to start the season," men's head coach Tim Siegel said. "These first couple of matches should give us an indication of what we can do this year."
The Red Raiders are currently ranked No. 35 in the nation in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Poll. They are coming off of a 1999 season when they made a fourth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and finished the season ranked No. 35 in the country.
The men are in action again on Saturday morning when they face UT-Arlington at the ATC. The match is set to start at 10 a.m.
Texas Tech is led by junior Borut Martincevic and senior Ryan Shupe. Martincevic is currently ranked as the No. 90 singles player in the nation in the ITA poll. Shupe is coming off his best season as a Red Raider in 1999 when he went 12-9 in singles play.
