Texas Tech men's tennis fails to come up on the winning side today for the first time this season. Tech lost 3-4 against Arizona State at Robson Player Facility in Tempe, Arizona. Tech's record falls to 3-1, while ASU improves to 4-2.
The Red Raiders lost two out of three in doubles matches. Borut Martincevic and Ryan Shupe could not muster enough against No. 26 Ed Carter and Alex Osterrieth, losing 6-8. On the second court, Ryan Davies and Jeremy Earl for Tech fell short to Mitchell Bowen and Matt Klinger, 5-8. The third court took action from Patricico Espinosa and Clay Estes, the doubles duo that defeated ASU's Andrew Golub and Pim Van Mele, 9-7.
Singles action kept the match just as close, with every match, but one going into a third set. The only match to end in two sets happened on court one with ASU's Alex Osterrieth defeating Tech's Ryan Shupe, 6-3, 6-3. Tech fell to 0-3, when Clay Estes lost to Pim Van Mele on the fifth court in a tough match, 4-6, 6-1, 3-6. The Red Raiders were kept alive by winning on courts three, four and six.
With a third set on its way, the attention turned to court two where the battle between Tech's Borut Martincevic and ASU's Ed Carter was taking place. Serving for the dual, Martincevic held the lead at 5-4, but could not hang on, losing 4-6, 7-6, 5-7.
The Red Raiders look to bounce back tomorrow as they continue their trip in Arizona at 11 a.m. against the University of Arizona in Tucson.
