LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raiders men's tennis team ran its record to 2-0 in spring competition with a 6-1 victory over the University of Texas-Arlington, Saturday at Texas Tech's Athletic Training Center.
Borut Martincevic, Jevgenij Cariov, Patricio Espinosa, Clay Estes, and Jeremy Earl all won their singles matches against the Mavericks. Ryan Shupe, who teamed with Borut Martincevic to grab a key victory for the Raiders in doubles play, won his first set 6-1 before falling 6-7, 3-6 in the final two sets to UTA's Andy Leber.
Head Coach Tim Siegel said the Raiders apparent easy win over the Mavericks understates the quality of the UTA team. Siegel praised his team for winning a series of crucial matches.
"UTA is ranked 60th in the country and that is very good," Siegel said. "I was pleased we were able to come out and win some close matches. I think the key for us was winning the doubles point."
After defeating Abilene Christian on Thursday and UTA Saturday, the Red Raiders have a two-week break from competition. Texas Tech will take the court again on Sunday, February 20, when it hosts UT-San Antonio.
