Red Raiders Track Teams Finish Fourth at UT-Arlington Meet

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas Tech men's and women's track teams both took fourth place finishes at the 24th annual Texas Arlington Invitational Saturday. The women finished with 81 points and the men scored 70. Southern Methodist won the women's competition with an overall score of 122 while UT-Arlington won the men's title with a score of 156.5.
A pair of first place performances from Nicole Mitchell highlighted the women's side in the 100 and 400-meter hurdles. Mitchell won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.37 and took the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 1:03.31. The women also got a first place finish from their 4x400 meter relay team. The team, consisting of Melonie Barrow, Sherri Coleman, Nina Roberts and Ngozi Iwu, finished with a time of 3:38.76, which set a new school record and provisionally qualified the team for the NCAA Championships.
Also on the women's side, Shannon Spaulding took home a second place finish in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:38.54. Kristen Koppes was right behind her with a time of 4:40.51. In the 100-meter dash, Sherri Coleman and Monique Wright-Cruse tied for third place with a time of 11.78.
On the men's side, Ty Williams won the shot put event with a distance of 16.59 meters (54'5.25"). Also in the throwing events, Ryan Luna placed first in the javelin with a throw of 63.64 meters (202'03").
The men's team also received a second place-finish from the 4x100-meter relay team (Reggie Hill, Antonio Franklin, Michael Franklin, Tunde Suleiman) with a time of 40.62. Desmond Johnson finished second in the 400-meter dash for Tech. His time was 47.24
