LUBBOCK, Texas - With spring football drills nearing the halfway point Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach is pleased with his team's effort, but continues to emphasize the need for better execution.
"Today was pretty good, but we are getting to that point in spring where you just have to push through," Leach said following a 2?-hour practice in full gear Wednesday. "It's to the point where we are a little banged up, but we need to work through that and execute better."
The first 30 minutes of Wednesday's workout were devoted to individual and position fundamental drills. A 20-minute special teams period marked the midway point of the practice before the attention turned to pass skeleton and team periods.
"We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go," Leach said. "I have no problem with the effort we're getting, but sometimes we just go into a lull and we have to work past that."
A couple of Red Raiders were working at new positions Wednesday. Senior Will Culpepper moved from linebacker to defensive tackle and junior Peter Abrigg switched from defensive back to receiver.
After taking Thursday off, Texas Tech will return to the practice field for a workout in shorts and headgear on Friday. The Red Raiders are scheduled to scrimmage Saturday morning.
Following Friday's practice, Red Raider fans will have an opportunity to get to know the new Tech football staff at "Meet the Coaches Night". The event will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion across from Jones Stadium.
The 2000 Red-Black Game is set for 7 p.m. April 15 at Jones Stadium. Admission is free and Tech officials are setting their sights toward a new spring game attendance record of 20,000 at the contest.
