CORPUS CHRISTI - After dropping the first game of the day at the "Bash by the Bay Tournament", the Texas Tech Red Raiders softball team rode the arm of staff ace Amanda Renfro to a pair of victories, including a near perfect game, and advanced to the championship game of the tournament Sunday at Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Cabaniss Field. The Red Raiders will play Evansville in the final game.
Tech stands at 7-15 on the season after Saturday's games as they lost to Missouri-Kansas City 3-2 and defeated Evansville 4-1 and TAMU-Corpus Christi 2-0.
Renfro baffled the opposing hitters in both Tech victories and improved to 5-7 on the season. Dana Yocum took the loss for Tech against UMKC as she allowed three runs (one earned) in six innings. Her record fell to 2-3 on the year. Sandy Butler went 2-for-2 in the contest but three errors by Tech ended up costing them the game.
Renfro took the start in the second game against Evansville and came up with a big win. She scattered five hits over seven innings while allowing one unearned run and striking out 11. Renfro got into a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh with the winning run at the plate and one out. Tech led 4-1 but it appeared the Aces would force extra innings. However, after a quick conference at the pitching circle, Renfro promptly went out and struck out the next two Evansville batters to end the inning.
Renfro's second game was a masterpiece as she no-hit the TAMU-CC lineup while striking out a school record 15 batters in seven innings. She walked none and just missed a perfect game due to a passed ball on a third strike in the fifth inning. Renfro even added the game winning RBI when she singled to drive in Lynsey Haij in the first inning.
All told, Renfro is 3-0 in the tournament and has a 0.00 ERA and has struck out 38 batters while walking only two. She has gone 32 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
