Tech rebounds to takes series after 7-1 win over Utes on Sunday
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – No. 1 Texas Tech (40-3, 16-2) took the series against Utah (27-15-1, 5-9-1) with a 7-1 win on Sunday behind five home runs and another NiJaree Canady win in the circle. This is the Red Raiders second straight 40-win season, just the second time in program history they've done that – first being 2011-12.
Canady improved to 17-2 on the season and struck out 11 batters as Jackie Lis, Mia Williams, Lauren Allred and Taylor Pannell all hit homers in the game. Lis hit two home runs on the day, the second time this weekend she's done that, and is now up to 14 only behind Williams who hit her team-leading 16th.
Williams went 2-for-3 with two RBI, including her homer, as Lis went 2-for-4 with three RBI thanks to her two homers. Mihyia Davis added a triple and Jasmyn Burns got a single. Kaitlyn Terry threw the final inning of the game, retiring all three batters, and extended her on-base streak to 31 after drawing a walk.
Gerry Glasco is now 65-0 in conference series dating back to his time at Louisiana. Red Raiders had a tough defensive weekend overall but turned a 6-4-3 double play at a pivotal moment in the bottom of the fifth holding just a one-run lead.
How it Happened:
Canady seems to get sharper with every outing as she started out the game with back-to-back strikeouts and allowed one base runner via a walk. Pannell got the scoring started for Tech with a home run to lead off the second inning, her sixth of the season.
Both teams traded scoreless innings, including an inning where Canady struck out the side, until the sixth. Williams took the first pitch of her sixth inning at bat up the middle for single to set up Lis who, four pitches later, bombed a ball to left field to make it a 3-0 game. The Utes got a quick out after that, but Allred added another to the scoreboard with a shot over the center field wall to make it 4-0.
A double, error and a single scored Utah's lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Tech got that run back and then some in the seventh after Terry led off the inning by getting hit with a pitch and Williams drove a ball over the center field wall. Up 6-1, Lis wanted to add some more insurance as she hit her second homer of the game, fourth of the weekend, to make it 7-1.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will make their way to Logan, Utah to face Utah State at 3 p.m. CT tomorrow.
