LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech posted a first-round 304 Friday and is in fifth place following the first round of the 2000 Big 12 Conference Championships at the Lubbock Country Club. The University of Texas leads the event with a 293 score.
Tournament favorite Oklahoma State trails the Longhorns by two strokes, while Oklahoma is third at 298. Nebraska is in fourth and leads the Red Raiders by four strokes. Missouri is in sixth place, followed by Texas A&M, Baylor, Iowa State, Colorado, Kansas State and Kansas.
Individually, three players are knotted in first place after posting first-round 70s. Oklahoma State's Maria Boden and Emma Zackrisson and Oklahoma's Betsy Berry are tied at the top. Nebraska's Sarah Sasse and Texas' Suzanne Sowers are each one shot off the lead and tied for fourth.
For the Red Raiders, Priscillia Hunt (Phoenix, Ariz.) is tied in the 12th position after shooting an opening round 75. Stephanie Dukes (N. Richland Hills, Texas) and Melanie Hunt (Phoenix, Ariz.) each shot 76 and are tied for 15th, while Jamie Vannoy (Sandy, Ore.) is tied at 20th with a 77. Jennifer Newhouse (Bryan, Texas) is tied in 25th place with a 78.
The tournament resumes tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. at the Lubbock Country Club. The final round of the 54-hole event tees off at 8 a.m. Sunday morning.
