PHILADELPHIA - It was the opening day of the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia today and the Texas tech track and field squads had athletes in competition.
In the women's 3,000-meter run, Texas Tech's Evette Turner came away with a top 10 finish. Her time of 9:29.85 was a NCAA provisional qualifying time and good enough for eighth place. Kristen Koppes competed in the women's 5,000-meter run and finished with a time of 17:13.77, which put her in 25th place.
The women's relay teams were in action and the Red Raider 4x400 team posted a time of 3:42.64 in its preliminary heat. The time will advance the team to the finals on Saturday. The Tech women's 4x100 relay team, which has had a few record setting runs this season, needed one today but couldn't produce and therefore will most likely not advance to the finals in the event. The team ran a time of 46.09 in its preliminary round race this afternoon. However, a time in the sub-45.50 second range would have been necessary to advance the team beyond the qualifying round.
The only male athlete to compete on Thursday was Boniface Ndungu who finished the men's 5,000-meters in a time of 14:47.26.
