Kansas City, Mo - The Texas Tech men's tennis teamed exited the Big 12 Championships today with a 4-1 loss to the University of Texas. The Red Raiders finish their season with a 9-12 mark on the year.
Singles action position No. 1, Tech's Jevgenij Cariov did not finish his match against Texas' Nick Crowell. Borut Martincevic fell in position No. 2 to Michael Blue 6-2, 6-1. Position No. 3 Ryan Shupe battled Craig Edmondson, but fell short 6-4, 6-0. Clay Estes earned Tech's only victory on the day in position No. 4 by defeating Jean Simon of Texas 6-3, 6-4. Court No. 5 did not finish between Ron Kloppert and Patricio Espinosa. Jeremy Earl in position No. 6 took Michael Domanski to three sets before falling 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. The Red Raiders lost two out of three doubles matches and did not finish in position No. 1.
"I think the key was that we came out flat in our doubles matches and that carried over into the singles matches. We fought back, especially in the third set, but we just dug ourselves too big of a hole," eight-year head coach Tim Siegel said. " I am proud of the way that we came back but we just did not come out with a lot of emotion. Emotion not talent wins these matches."
