After spotting the visiting Oklahoma Sooners a 2-0 lead after the first inning, the Texas Tech Red Raiders tied the game in the sixth, but it was not enough as Oklahoma added three runs in the top of the ninth. With the loss, the Red Raiders drop to 28-20 on the season and 15-10 in the Big 12 while Oklahoma improved to 32-16 and 15-7 in conference play.
Oklahoma scored two runs in their first at bat on a double to left center by right fielder Jeff Bajenaru. Tech starter J.J. Newman allowed the double after walking and hitting a batter.
After the Sooners added a single run in the top of the third, Tech answered with two in the bottom half. Marco Cunningham's single and Jason Rainey's double provided the punch for the Red Raiders.
In the top of the fourth, Oklahoma took the lead on a double by Josh Witcher that scored Chad Cochell. However, Witcher was thrown out at third to end the inning when he tried to stretch the double into a triple.
Texas Tech tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth. In the fifth, Shaun Larkin started the inning with a single to right. He advanced to third on a single by Chaz Eiguren and scored one batter later on Rainey's infield single. Eric McLamore scored Tech's fourth run after leading off the sixth with his second triple of the year. Larkin's sacrifice fly scored McLamore.
In the ninth, Blake McGinley retired the first two batters before allowing four straight hits. Oklahoma scored the go-ahead run on an interference call that allowed Jerome Godsey to score the fifth Sooner run. Three batters later, Rick Park added two more on a double to the right field corner.
The second game of the final conference home series will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. The Sunday finale is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Dan Law Field in Lubbock.
