Red Raider 4X400 Relay Team Places Seventh at Penn Relays

Texas Tech's 4X400 relay team ran its event in 3:41.72 to take seventh place at the prestigious Penn Relays on Saturday in Philadelphia.
The team of Melonie Barrow, Sherri Coleman, Shannon Spaulding and Ngozi Iwu qualified for the finals on Thursday with a time of 3:42.64 in its preliminary heat and shaved almost a second off that time in the finals.
The University of Tennessee team won the event with a time of 3:38.14. Mississippi State and Indiana both finished just ahead of Tech, with times of 3:40.62 and 3:40.69 respectively.
The Texas Tech men's and women's track teams also made a strong showing at the Sooner Outdoor Invitational on Saturday.
Desmond Johnson and Antonio Franklin took first and second place in the 400-meter dash and Mike Franklin came in fourth place. Johnson won with a time of 47.61 and Antonio Franklin finished close behind at 47.88. Mike Franklin finish in 48.92.
On the women's side, Ashley Ramsey and Candice Cole tied with Taylor Cates of Oklahoma State for first place in the high jump. Ramsey and Cole each cleared 1.52 meters (5'00"), while Tech's Joni Gardner took fourth place, clearing 1.47 meters (4'10").
Also taking first place for the Red Raiders were Alex Olivares in the long jump and Ty Williams in the shot put. Olivares posted a mark of 6.72 meters (22'00"), besting second place Matt Tennison of Oklahoma (6.28) by 1'5". Williams best throw went 16.19 meters (53'1.5") as he out-distanced Matt Swain of UT-Arlington by just under two feet.
