Vannoy Leads Tech to Second-Place at Utah-Dixie Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas - Jamie Vannoy (Sandy, Ore.) finished among the top 10 individuals for the third year in a row and helped lead the Red Raiders to a second-place finish in the 25-team Utah-Dixie Classic at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah, Tuesday afternoon.
Vannoy finished in a tie for third after placing eighth in the event last season and tying for first during her sophomore campaign. The Red Raiders won the tournament during the 1997-98 season and finished second last year to Oklahoma State.
Texas Tech turned in a three-round 895 to finish eight strokes behind ninth-ranked Oklahoma State, which set a tournament record with an 887. The Red Raiders, who entered the tournament ranked No. 40, finished one stroke ahead of No. 15 New Mexico and 24 shots ahead of No. 23 Missouri.
Vannoy opened the tournament with a 73 in the first round and followed with rounds of 72 and 73 in the 54-hole event. She finished at 2-over par. Freshmen Melanie Hunt (Phoenix, Ariz.) earned the second top 10 finish of her young career in a seventh-place tie. She ended the tournament with a 6-over par 222. Sophomore Jennifer Newhouse (Bryan, Texas) rounded out the top 20 for the Red Raiders in a 13th-place tie. Junior Priscillia Hunt (Phoenix, Ariz.) and freshman Stephanie Dukes (N. Richland Hills, Texas) finished tied at 30th and 33rd, respectively.
The Red Raiders finished ahead of all teams in the tournament with 33 birdies and shot even par on all par fives. Tech shot par on 167 holes.
