LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech went through its final scrimmage of the spring prior to next Saturday's Red-Black Game with a 100-play workout in full pads Saturday afternoon on the grass practice field Southeast of Jones Stadium.
The team spent much of the scrimmage implementing the passing game and working on defensive schemes. Overall, head coach Mike Leach says the practice went well.
"I thought today was good," Tech head coach Mike Leach said. "We had two uneven periods on offense and defense, but did a good job overall. The defense did a nice job throwing up a wall and the offense moved the ball down the field well. At this point we're still polishing, but executing.
"The important thing for us is how far we've come in a few weeks," Leach added, referring to the team's steady progress.
Quarterback Kliff Kingsbury saw a bulk of the action behind center and completed 30-of-46 for 489 yards and three touchdowns. The play of the day goes to Darrell Jones, who reached over defensive back Derrick Briggs for a 76-yard touchdown reception from Nathan Chandler. Jones finished the afternoon with two catches for 99 yards. Newcomer James Wegener caught seven balls for 109 yards and a TD, while Tim Baker grabbed six catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. Rhett Stone carried the ball 14 times for 41 yards and a TD.
On the other side of the ball, the defense recorded six sacks, while Lennard Christensen and Preston Hartfield each tallied interceptions.
The final two practices prior to the spring game resume at 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
Texas Tech's annual spring game is April 15 at Jones Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and there will be no admission charge. Red Raider players and coaches will be available on the field following the game for photos and autographs.
